Parents and Guardians,
Greetings! My name is Chris Andies and I am the band director at Church Hill Intermediate School. Your child has expressed an interest in learning to play an instrument in the CHIS Band. Participation in the CHIS Band is an excellent way to teach your child self-discipline through practice, creative expression through performance, self-sacrifice, teamwork, and an appreciation of the fine arts. I feel that the school band program offers students opportunities that are found nowhere else in the curriculum. The first year of band at CHIS is the most important for our students, as it is the springboard for the eventual transition to CHMS Band. The next three years of instrumental training culminates with membership into the award winning Volunteer High School Band. There are tremendous opportunities that arise through participation in our band programs. Band students gain a sense of belonging, are taught leadership skills, effective communication, time management, self-discipline, problem solving skills, listening comprehension, critical thinking, and decision making skills. Band also heavily compliments core educational classes such as Math, Social Studies, Science, Foreign Language, and English Language Arts. Students that participate in the school band program stand a much greater chance of receiving acceptance into degree programs as well as monetary supplements in the form of scholarships.
Many have said the benefits of band extend far beyond the mastery and understanding of musical technique. The nurturing of a positive self-mage is a certain reward for any student who plays an active role in the band community. Ongoing research confirms that students of music score higher in academic subjects and are actively sought by universities not only for their musical talents, but because they rank at the top of their classes in school.
Band tryouts begin Wednesday, September 30th and Thursday October 1st during Related Arts classes. Students will be able to try out different instruments to determine what they are best suited for. Interested students will be trying out for flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, baritone, tuba, and percussion. Students do not have to have any prior instrumental experience. Due to Covid-19, increased precaution is being taken to ensure complete safety in conducting instrument fittings. Students will remain socially distanced and all equipment will receive thorough cleaning and sanitization. I am certain through your encouragement and my dedication to music education, your child’s participation in the band program will be of great value to them in life. Each student will receive additional information to take home after they have completed their tryout. Band classes will begin shortly after tryouts and will take the place of Related Arts.
